The Obsidian Cliff is an exercise in architectural humility. Positioned on a precarious coastal ridge, the structure is designed to disappear into the dark basalt landscape rather than compete with it. By utilizing a low-profile, horizontal axis, the residence acts as a windbreak, creating a protected internal courtyard where the sound of the ocean is filtered into a rhythmic, distant hum.

Inside, the boundaries of the home are defined by massive floor-to-ceiling glass panels and deep-set eaves. The layout is a sequence of "viewing chambers," where each room is oriented toward a specific celestial or oceanic event. It is a house built for the observation of time—a dark vessel that allows the vibrant colors of the California coast to take center stage.

Material Integrity (Basalt & Burnt Cedar)

To match the rugged coastline, we utilized Shou Sugi Ban (charred cedar) and locally sourced volcanic stone. These materials were chosen for their resilience against the salt-heavy air and their ability to develop a silvered patina over time, further embedding the house into its natural context.

The Philosophy of the Void

Central to this project is the concept of "The Void"—the intentional use of empty space to direct focus. We stripped away all ornamental cabinetry and hardware, allowing the raw texture of the stone walls and the shifting shadows of the day to become the primary decor of the home.
